Abstract

Positron Emission Topography (PET) with fluorine-18-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG)was performed in 31 patients. Patients were composed of malignant bone tumors(12 patients), malignant soft tissue tumors(13 patients), metastatic tumors(5 patients) and one lymphoma. The extent of tumors was checked in three orthogonal dimensions with MRI. The results were as follows: 1. Metabolic activity increased according to the extent of malignant soft tissue tumors (mean SUV : 4.4). 2. In metastatic tumors, the standard uptake value (SUV) increased remarkably (mean SUV 10.6). 3. In malignant bone tumor, SUV varied according to the tissue type (mean SUV:4.0). SUV in osteosarcoma was higher than that of chondrosarcoma. 4. Overall SUV in malignant musculoskeletal tumor was 5.8. Metabolic activity varied according to the tissue type of the bone tumor and the extent of soft tissue tumors.
